The English Learning Program of John Robert Powers takes pride in the success of its students who took the Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC) Listening and Reading administered by Hopkins International Partners at John Robert Powers-Makati last January 21, 2012.

Topping the test is Magnolia Marcos, a student of JRP-Quezon City, who got an almost perfect score of 980 out of 990. Her score placed her above the 99th percentile rank in the Philippines. The nine other students who garnered an average score of 846 are: Hazel Pangandian (Makati), Shane Lawrence Ty (Makati), Edelisa May Cayanga (Makati), Platt William (Alabang), Carina Cunanan (QC), Joan Carla Estepa (Makati), Anna Liza Maliwanag (QC), Ghel Navarroza (Alabang); and Robert Sabado (QC).

The average score, 846, means that these students are in the Advanced Working Proficiency Level, and that they “can typically understand the main ideas of complex texts on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in their fields of specialization. They can also interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers possible without strain for either party. They can produce clear, detailed texts on a wide range of subjects and explain different viewpoints on a topical issue.” According to Hopkins International Partners, this average score is a very good one considering that these students are second-language users of English.

TOEIC is one of the largest standardized tests in Korea, Japan, China and other countries with five million test takers every year. It is being used as a tool to benchmark the English proficiency of students, teachers, employees, and other professionals and as a means to effectively measure the everyday skills of people working in an international environment.  It is also recognized by CGFNS, US Department of Homeland Security, UK Border Agency (for UK work and immigration visas), Health professions Council of the UK, CARNA-Canada (Colleges and Associations of Registered nurses of Alberta).

TOEIC is given to JRP students who belong to the Intermediate, Upper Intermediate and Advanced proficiency levels and have finished one or more stages of the English Language Program.
